In a case that has sparked controversy in Germany, 65-year-old teacher Annegret Raunigk, who already has 13 children, gave birth to quadruplets via Caesarian section after undergoing fertility treatment in Ukraine with anonymous sperm and egg donors.
The three baby boys and a girl, weighing between 655 and 960 grams (1.4 to 2.1 pounds) at birth, were described as "absolute high-risk" cases by medical experts. Two of the newborns required assistance with breathing, and two had to undergo surgery.
Remarkably, Raunigk's pregnancy was relatively free of major complications, and all her babies weighed more than five pounds at birth. However, two of the newborns needed breathing support and two required surgery shortly after being born.
Despite the risks, Raunigk expressed no fear for her health or the health of her children during the pregnancy. Notably, her other kids are aged 10 to 44, making her the world's oldest mother of quadruplets. Additionally, she has seven grandchildren, meaning her quadruplets are actually younger than her own grandkids.
