Light Shine Canine is a wonderful non-profit group that helps to rescue stray and abandoned dogs in Pine Ridge and other Indian Reservations located in South Dakota. One day, they stumbled upon an adorable pup who was roaming around without any hair on its body. Without hesitation, the team decided to take her in and provide the care she needed.
Since the pup had no fur, it was difficult for the volunteers to determine the dog’s breed or age. However, after careful observation and analysis, the team estimated that she was approximately two years old when she arrived at the rescue center.
Upon encountering her, the volunteers observed that the dog’s skin appeared to be raw and inflamed. Having encountered similar situations before, they were able to identify her condition as chronic mange and other skin infections, which are incredibly uncomfortable for dogs. Additionally, the poor pup was weak from hunger and barely had the energy to move when offered food. Though initially dubbed “Tiny Dancer,” she was later given the name Mikita upon being transferred to another canine rescue organization.
Mikita was lucky enough to be taken care of by a volunteer from Happy Tails Rescue who nursed her back to health. Thanks to their efforts, Mikita’s mange started to clear up and her fur began to grow again. It was then discovered that Mikita was actually a husky. This is when she met her new human, Jessi Sova. Jessi was looking for a companion for her rescue dog, Kane, and Mikita fit the bill perfectly.
After coming across Mikita’s story on Facebook, Jessi knew she had to meet her. Without wasting any time, she applied to adopt Mikita and arranged a meeting. When Jessi introduced her dog, Kane, to Mikita, they all instantly bonded over her sweet temperament, leading to Jessi being offered the chance to adopt Mikita. However, after adoption, they discovered that Mikita was suffering from discospondylitis – a type of infection in the vertebrae. At first, they thought surgery would be necessary, but the vets informed them that an intense course of antibiotics would aid in her full recovery. To cover Mikita’s medical bills, Jessi raised funds and donated any surplus money to charities and various causes.
Upon waking Jessi one evening with her weeping, they discovered that Mikita was still experiencing pain. Although Mikita typically wakes Jessi up at night when she needs something, her cries that night were particularly intense. In fact, Mikita was unable to move her legs and required urgent transportation to the hospital.
Following a rewarding treatment, Mikita has transformed into her authentic self – a nurturing, spirited, lively, and fluffy cherub!
She has the freedom to doze off and snuggle up next to her sibling, Kane. They intertwine their paws as a way of reassuring each other’s safety and well-being.
After her successful recovery from discospondylitis, Mikita’s fur grew back completely. Despite limitations in bending her back, she still enjoys playing with Kane more than ever before.
Mikita had to work hard to build up her strength and stamina, but she ultimately became an unstoppable force. This just proves that with sufficient patience and care, our furry companions can recover from any challenging experience they may have faced.
