You will not believe your eyes in the world that there are such intelligent dogs. Personally, I am also a dog lover. When I was a kid, I felt excited and loved a little dog when it once noticed I was chasing chickens in the garden and ran to help me.
In this article, I will present and introduce to you the superhuman abilities of a K9 dog - also known as an American working dog. It is not too much to say, they are the smartest dogs in the world.
To start this article, please watch the video above.
What breed is K9 working dog?
The breed that is often selected for training to become a working dog is the Malinois breed – also known as the breed for shepherding, in Vietnam, it is popularly known as the Berger dog.
The domestication movement of dogs in Europe in the 1800s, helped people discover the valuable characteristics that this dog breed has. As its original name suggests, it is a "sheep dog" so their purpose is to help people herd livestock from wild animals, and it seems to have done that task very well until this day. now. You will hear many different breeds from all over the country after a process of domestication and crossbreeding, such as Belgian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds…
What are the characteristics of a shepherd dog?
The characteristic of shepherd dogs in general, or the common feature of service dogs, is very intelligent. They also have a relatively larger average size than other breeds (about 55 to 65 cm wide, about 22 to 40 kg). Tall, handsome, smart!!
However, there is also another trait that is aggressiveness. You've probably heard a lot about herding dogs causing injuries to people. The point is, if aggression is tamed and promoted to the “bad guys” it can be very beneficial. But if you do not know how to "teach" them, they will become a danger to you.
What can K9 sniffer dogs do?
Not to mention the motor abilities and the thinking abilities, first of all, they must be praised for their loyalty. The US K9 canine force was established in 1977, and officially operates under the support of the related budget. Do not despise the dogs, over the past 40 years, this K9 force has protected many important people such as the president, vice president, and election candidates.
They can work 10-15 hours a day regardless of country location and weather. They serve regardless of party, whether it's Obama or Trump, they stand up for it (of course!).
“If you let your guard down, world history will change”
Secret Service Bill G – director of the US K9 dog training program
The above sentence is the statement of special agent Bill G. He once recounted a real situation that happened at the White House, when suddenly a strange man jumped over the fence of the White House and kept running. An officer quickly loosened the dog's leash and ordered it to chase the suspect at a speed of up to 40-50km/h. It knows what to do on its own and will certainly never give up until it completes the task or receives another order.
Besides, sniffer dogs (or agents) can do a lot of other things like, sniffing, finding objects. Of course, the soldiers loved them very much. They also participated in the mission to destroy terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in 2011. In some ways, they are really like a superhero saving the world, no kidding.
They are not like machines, but distinguish between good and bad behavior.
They are trained in a methodical way and have a clear mind, not acting like a new beast, if you don't tell it, don't do it. They are very child friendly. They distinguish between a harmful action and a friendly action. They almost have an intuition of their own, predicting and detecting dangerous behavior from their subjects. That is one of the great successes in the training of working dogs of the US military.
As you can see in the video, as long as the stranger has a knife-drawing behavior, they immediately express their attitude and block response. It's great, isn't it?
How are K9 service dogs trained?
Service dog training is a very lengthy process as it begins with training the handler. Dog handlers go through a long training process to ensure that they train their dog to the best of its ability. Dog handlers must first complete the required police academy training and have one to two years of patrol experience before being eligible to transfer to a special canine unit.
In order for a dog to be considered for a police department, it must first pass a basic obedience training course. They must be able to obey their handler's commands without hesitation. This allows the police to have full control over the dog, wanting it to do something about a suspect.
Dogs trained in Europe are often given commands in the native language of the country. Dogs are initially trained with this language for basic behaviors, so it will be easier for the police to learn new words/commands, than to retrain the dog to follow new commands. This is contrary to the popular belief that police dogs are trained in another language so that suspects cannot command dogs against officers.
Little-known sacrifices
Their bravery in spite of all circumstances is indisputable. But that's why they sometimes die. There are very touching stories told by the police team about their sacrifice.
When injured, they will be cared for by veterinarians dedicated to saving lives. Sometimes they have to be left with permanent injuries such as losing a leg, an eye... Like the case of the US Navy explosives-detecting dog Lucca, who lost a leg on a mission in Afghanistan.
And certainly, many service dogs sacrificed their lives for their own missions, when they were buried as a true "hero", with flowers and tears of their "comrades".
As a pet, as a colleague, and as a warrior, the dedication of these dogs is as great as that of humans.
