Exhausted mom stunned after giving birth to a 12lbs baby who is twice the average weight.
Exhausted mother Paula Brown suddenly had to think about ditching baby clothes she bought for her tot Theo – because he was nearly twice the weight of an average newborn.
Dad Gareth Brown, 32, said staff in Blackburn Birthing Center told the couple it was the biggest baby they’d seen for at least five years. He said:
“We were all making guesses at what weight the baby would come in, but nobody was expecting that. “It was strange, most of the babies there were tiny, and Theo was huge.”
Recalling her heroic labor, mom Paula, 33, said: “It was not pleasant and it was hard work and tiring. But the end result of it all is just fantastic.” Theo’s total weight was 12lbs 4 1/2 oz while an average British baby’s just over 7lbs.
Yet Theo does not take the title of Britain’s biggest baby delivered naturally. That is thought to belong to baby George from Gloucester born in February 2013, who weighed an impressive 15lbs 7oz.
But even he pales into insignificance compared to the world record which was achieved in January 19, 1879, with the baby weighing a jaw-dropping 22 lbs.
